The scales came out of Bettina Halloran’s bathroom in week one, which she describes as the most frightening thing anyone had asked her to do in a decade.
Baseline took three weeks and no intervention at all. The team wanted a picture of an ordinary month before they changed anything about it.
What the numbers hid
Evenings were the problem, as they usually are. Not the food itself so much as the eight-hour gap that preceded it.
A daily weight is mostly noise. People make real decisions on noise, and the decisions are usually bad ones.

Where the plateau came from
The fortnightly group ran with the same nine people throughout. Nobody was weighed in front of anybody. Most of the time was spent on what had gone badly.
“I weigh once a month now, at the clinic, and I don’t think about it in between. That’s the change. Not the number.”
